I have a confession to make. While it may seem I am good with my words these days, let me assure you, it has been a very long growth curve.
And I continually learn to this day.
I often listen to speakers such as Robin Sharma, Les Brown, Tony Robbins and the like.
They seem to just have a way with words. They bring together two completely un-connected words...yet make them sound beautiful when combined.
(ie: As well as 'mindset', Robin uses: 'heartset', he also uses concepts like "Total Craft Mastery" or "Be Relentlessly Obsessive To Greatness")
It made me think...What is it about these guys that have such an impactful way on how we hear their words and their message.
I deconstructed it and came to the conclusion that what they are doing is using 'power words'.
A concept I hadn't really heard of, but once I typed into google it started making a lot of sense.
I found an article which listed 300 power words and I printed it off. It was in around 8 categories (listed below) and I circled and wrote down around 5-10 from each category to consciously use over the next few weeks until they become second nature.
Take the following and repeat out loud (for greater impact).
Before: Stop being a victim After: Escape the Prison of Victimhood
Before: See the good in the world After: Discover the stunning beauty of your life
Before: Become better After: Become the hero of your future
Here is the list of words that I found useful in their respective categories. As you read them, think about the inner response they provoke. How do they make you feel? what do you see? how could you use these?
- Cheer Squad
- Bully (Defeat your inner bully)
- Breakdown vs Breakthrough
- Rich (Become knowledge rich)
- Burn the Boats
The fact of the matter is, when you speak with power, people listen. (as long as it's authentic and you don't overuse of course).
Hope this helps. Hayden
